The Maya (A7) The Maya are Native Americans who live on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. They share common linguistic heritage. The people were divided into at least 10 different language groups each as different to English, as English is to Dutch. They are part of the larger cultural area called Mesoamerica.

The pre-contact Maya evolved and developed over a period of two thousand years. The Maya had many great City states. These ities rose to power had their day in the sun and then set. Befare the arnval of Europeans cities such as Nakbe, El Mirador, Tikal, now have a clearer picture of religion, war, trade and science. Copan was abandoned due to war and famine. The Acropolis of the Copan Valley, shown here, clearly illustrates that the community that existed her had strong leaders; political, religious and scientific.

Yet they failed to find solutions to depleted resources and war. The Maya left impressive artifacts but they highlight the failure of this culture. The Mesoamerican experience could

The Pacific coast is 1 24km long. Honduras is arcund 112,000 sq. km. in size. The country is largely mountalnous with narrow marshy Iowlands along the coast. It has several Caribbean Islands as part of its territory. The Bay Islands are the most prominent.

In 1971 the United States ceded several islands to Honduras these are called the Swan Islands and are about 100 miles off the coast. (The Swans are not shown on this map. ) Approximately 12% of the roads in Honduras are paved. Honduras is the world’s 4th largest exporter ofbananas. The ountry has a large foreign debt in proportion to its exports. In recent times the formation of Maquila industries has generated a third of the country’s export income. The capital of Honduras is egucigalpa.

The City was founded in 1578 as a mining camp. Old Tegucigalpa has never been destroyed by earthquake or fire and so it retains the quaint characteristics of a colonial town. It has narrow streets, sidewalks, over hanging balconies and stair- stepped streets. An interesting fact about the city-rare among world captals—it is not connected to the rest of the country by a railway.
